Is it normal for my male dog not to eat when a female dog is in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 13 lbs

Is it normal if Tiny isn’t eating food, while my female dog is about to go into heat? He’s eating ham but no dog food, and he’s drinking water.

Yes, this can happen when a male dog is around a female dog in heat. Please do not give Tiny ham, this is high in fat and it can cause pancreatitis. That could also be the cause of him not eating his dog food if you are offering him ham, he prefers that. Only offer him the dog food. Best of luck.
