My dog is licking and scratching his tail. What anti-itch spray helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 85 lbs

My 4 yr. old yellow lab had his anal glands removed July 7th, which was successful. However, he continues to lick and scratch with his teeth, the base of his tail and that area. Not sure if it's an itch. I wash the area every time after he does his business in order to keep the area clean. Is there an anti-itch ointment that I can apply to the area if it is an itch?

You can use a spray such as Pramosoothe spray, which has a steroid formulated into the spray to help relieve itching / irritation. If the spray does not help and the problem worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Trooper so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
