My dog picked up a frog. Is he poisoned? When do symptoms appear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 24 lbs

My dog picked up a small frog/toad in his mouth. It's been about 10 minutes and he seems ok so far, will he be ok? If the frog/toad was poisonous would it happen right away, or could it slowly happen? Should I take him to an emergency vet or keep an eye on him for the rest of the night?

If the toad was toxic, you’d see symptoms such as head shaking, severe drooling, and pawing at the mouth and eyes almost immediately. Because it’s been 10 minutes since Max picked up the toad, I would suspect it’s not poisonous. I would not rush him into the ER vet, but keep an eye on him to be safe. If you do see the signs I listed, then take him to the vet right away. Hopefully, he should be fine. I hope this helps, best of luck!

Without knowing what type of frog it was, it would be hard to tell. Symptoms of toxicity to look out for include vomiting, diarrhea, stumbling/confusion, dilated pupils, drooling, etc. If you are noticing these signs, or thing the frog your dog ate was toxic, it is best to seek veterinary care immediately.
