I have noticed a very bad smell in my guinea pig Boog’s feces and I was wondering if it’s a deeper health issue. I feed him fresh water, fresh pellets, and hay everyday and fresh veggies twice a day. He shares the cage with Archie (my other guinea pig) and I just want to make sure that if Boog does have something that it isn’t contagious to Archie. If possible, may I treat it at home or will I have to visit a vet? Also, how can I tell if it’s diarrhea or regular poop?

Hi there, I’m sorry to hear that Boog isn’t well. He should have normal, formed, firmed fecal pellets. If the feces is slimy or unformed, it is abnormal. If the feces is abnormal than I would recommend taking a fecal sample in to be tested. Likewise, if you cannot find the source of the smell, you should take Boog in to be examined to make sure nothing too serious is going on. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
