Why is my cat peeing in her bed and licking it? Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 14 lbs

My cat is urinating in her own bed and then licking it.. Is this normal? I clean her bed in the wash after every incident but as soon as I set it down she just urinates in it again. Is she sick?

This is not normal at all. She may be suffering from a urinary tract infection, and/or incontinence. She is licking herself and her bed trying to clean the urine off. I suggest you take your kitty to your veterinarian for an exam and a urinalysis. If she is suffering from a UTI she will need prescription medication.

It sounds like your pet could potentially have a UTI and an anal gland problem (two sacs located at the 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock position). This can get worse with time so I recommend you schedule an appointment for your cat soon so that she can get the proper treatment she needs for her care. They will check her anal glands to see if they need to be expressed and also run a urinalysis to check for bacteria and WBC's which would be present in cases of a UTI infection. Once they find out what kind of bacteria are present, then they can prescribe the appropriate antibiotic treatment for it.

It sounds like your cat has some type of bladder problem - straining to pee, urinating small amounts, and licking herself are all signs of discomfort and feeling like she needs to go. In a young adult cat like Jessie, the most common cause of these symptoms is something called FIC (feline interstitial cystitis) - with this problem, the urine becomes excessively concentrated and may form crystals, which irritate the bladder wall and urethra causing pain. Other possibilities include bladder stones or a urinary tract infection, although these are uncommon in healthy cats. I would recommend taking Jessie to a vet as soon as possible - he/she can do a simple urine test to help determine the problem and get her some medication to resolve it.

A cats uterus is inside the body, not outside, unless she has a uterine prolapse (requires immediate surgery and looks like a sac hanging outside the vagina). I think you are referring to her vagina. If she is licking her vagina frequently and it is red, then there is likely an infection present, either of her vagina or a urinary tract infection. I would recommend taking Lovely to your vet to have her urine tested to see if this is in fact just a UTI. Either infection will require a short course of antibiotics from your vet to clear, so its best to take her in as soon as you can so that you can provide her some relief. Best of luck to you and Lovely. I hope she gets well soon. Take care.
