Why is my Maltese dog's inner ear red, crusty, and itchy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 9.5 lbs

One of my Maltese dog's inner ear flaps is red, crusty/flaking, and itchy. The other ear is fine. I don't see any brownish discharge. What is going on? What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an ear infection. There may be an underlying allergy causing this as well. I recommend that you have Apollo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!
