Golden retriever puppy has heart gallop sounds. Will she outgrow it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 14 days old | 12 lbs

My husband and I are picking up a golden retriever puppy at the end of August. She just had her six week checkup and the vet noted “gallop sounds with no murmur”. The vet told the puppy breeder that she would likely grow out of it but to keep an eye on it at her eight week checkup after we pick her up and bring her home. Is this vet right in that large breed dogs usually grow out of gallop sounds? What I have read on other vet websites sounds daunting but is only about adult dogs, not puppies.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, and congratulations on your soon to be new puppy! There are a variety of cardiac issues that dogs can outgrow over the first few months of life (such as a murmur or an arrhythmia). Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee that that will be the case and the puppy won't have a congenital heart issue. I would recommend speaking to your breeder about what your options are if the puppy doesn't outgrow this and has an underlying issue. Good luck!
