Dog's tongue scratched by cat: When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 16 lbs

My dog got scratched on the tongue by a cat from local grocery store. Owner says cat has had it shots but I really dont believe him. The scratch bleed for about 15 min or so. I tried cleaning as best as i could with mild soap n water. Then hydrogen peroxide. (He was giving me hard time of course) Should I still take him to vet?

I would probably just keep an eye on it for now. Tongues bleed really badly but heal very fast. Check it a few times a day to make sure it is not swelling or having discharge that would require antibiotics or pain medicine. Also, in case you didn't know hydrogen peroxide will cause them to vomit if swallowed so be aware of that.
