My dog has a rash or hives in his potty area. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog has developed what appears to be a rash or what looks like hives in his potty region. It started with one sore place and more have appeared in the last few days. Something to worry about or will it clear up on its own?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I suspect that this may be from him licking at this region in which case it may not resolve on its own. This may be due to allergies and/or possibly an infection. A mild infection could resolve on its own. However, if no resolution is noted, I recommend you consider having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
