Is my 6-mo poodle's burping and bad breath normal? Can she have chews?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 6 months and 5 days old | 36 lbs

I have a few questions regarding to the health of my 6 months old standard poodle girl: 1: I find she burps right after waking up occasionally in the early morning, is it normal? Given she hasn’t eaten or drunk yet. 2: Sometimes her breath smells like blood especially early morning after wake up, is it normal for her age as she has been changing teeth? Or she has finished changing teeth? I don’t know as I am a first time dog owner. CanI start givingher greenie and bullysticks now? Thx

Congratulations on your new dog! I would not stress over some burping in the morning as long as Coco is otherwise normal (normal bowel movements, normal appetite, no vomiting, normal weight gain). The breath odor could be from losing teeth if she still has baby teeth, most adult teeth will have come in by 6 months of age. If you feel there is a bad odor to her breath I would have her vet examine her to check for dental or GI disease. Greenies should be fine but should be given while supervised to ensure she doesn't ingest the entire greenie without chewing it up first as this can cause an intestinal blockage. The same goes for bully sticks and these shouldn't be given in large quantities. Also observe her for stomach upset after these because for some dogs they might have sensitive stomachs and they can cause GI upset.
