Sphynx kitten's skin irritated after bath. What's the best treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Sphynx | Male | neutered | 4 months and 10 days old | 7.7 lbs

My sphynx kitten Chase had Giardia and I bathed him with a shampoo containing chlorhexidine and unfortunately his skin got irritated (see photos). I’m desisperate because the vet does not know what medication to give him or what to use on his skin. He has been in this condition for 1 week now. The vet was supposed to consult a dermatologist but so far I have not heard anything. What is the best treatment in this case since he just had a month ago a course of antibiotic?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chase. I would recommend considering bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. There are prescription formulas available. Next, he may require a different antibiotic. I would use one suited for his skin such as a cephalosporin. If he is itching, he will need a medication to decrease the inflammation as well. It will be important to start him on a prescription probiotic as well due to the frequent use of antibiotics. If the skin does not improve, he may require testing to rule out other conditions. I hope this information helps!
