My month-old kitten's anus looks swollen. Is it normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 14 days old | 1lb

Month old kittens anus appears swollen. Color is normal and Duck is still very playful and energetic. He's eating well and gaining weight like he should. Is it just irritated from having to help him poo (found him abandoned at about 12 days old) will the swelling go down? Or is this normal? It's been a couple decades since I've had a kitten so young.

It will go down one the stools become normal, i suspect at the moment he is suffering from diarrhea and this is why the anus looks like that, once the stools become normal again the anus will recover.

Unfortunately the pic is a bit out of focus, but the anus seems pretty normal anyway, just slightly inflamed but not prolapsed at all. As these inflammation episodes could be related to diet I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. Please do not hesitate to contact us again (with a another picture as well!!) on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
