My senior cat has a black and bloody patch on her hip. What is it?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 16 lbs

My aunts cat Bella is about 13or14yo and has a black and bloody patch on her back left hip area. I cleaned it with soap and water and black like hunks of stuff came out. It was no fun. There is a pinkish area on it that seemed bloody from her scratching. I am worried and wonder what it is?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am afraid that based on its appearance this could be something like a growth. This could certainly be something else like an infection. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
