8-week puppy: bloody stool, diarrhea, worms. When to see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 24 days old | 56 lbs

my 8week old puppy had bright red blood in his stool today yesterday also and he had pooped an excessive amount about 9 to 10 time in a row. he had his first round of shots last Saturday and was given a deworming medicine. He hasn't shown any signs of worms till this morning that I noticed a long worm like thing in his stool. He had a bit of diarrhea and threw up once this morning but that was it has been fine all day but I notice the blood in stool once yesterday and once today. Should I worry?

Hi there and thanks for posting! I wouldn't start to worry unless Harley starts experiencing an increase in bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. You can try feeding him a bland diet of chicken and rice with a few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling ) for a day or two and see if that helps firm up his stool a bit. If the diarrhea and vomiting continue happening, however, I would recommend having Harley seen by his veterinarian. There may be other causes such as a viral or parasitic infection that will need to be ruled out with your vet. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

    Looks and sounds like it can wait. He does need to be seen however because that looks like some blood in the stool. Blood on semi formed to formed stool indicates inflammation of the colon and typically requires treatment. So long as he continues to feel and eat well. If he strains some and does not want to go out like every 30-60 minutes to poop, I would wait. But if any of this changes then I would take him in. Eggs and a lot of parasites are microscopic so what you are seeing is likely food related. Unless it's been sitting out for a while then you might be seeing fly eggs on the poop.
