My new cat has smelly diarrhea and messy fur. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old

I just adopted and brought a 2-year-old cat from a shelter about two weeks ago. One day, when I returned home, he seemed to have had diarrhea or vomited in the litter box and in the living room. He seemed fine after then, but I just noticed some feces around his anus, which smelled very bad. I've been trying to wipe it, but he has been very uncooperative as I expected. What should I do at this point? Does he need to see a vet?

Hi and thanks for posting! Diarrhea or loose stool can have many causes- parasitic infection, viral, or bacterial infections are all possible. Dietary indiscretion, eating something out of the ordinary, changing new foods rapidly, or certain food sensitivities can be a cause. You can try putting a few teaspoons of plain canned pumpkin in his food to help firm up his stool or you can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps. If not, I would recommend Sensi/Boba see his veterinarian. I would be sure to being a fecal sample with you in case his veterinarian wants to test his stool. I hope this helps!
