Why isn't my newly adopted cat eating, pooping, or using litter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12.3 lbs

Hi! My newly adopted cat hasn’t been eating or pooping since he arrived home on Sunday. He’s also had little water. Yesterday he meowed loudly and seemed to be looking for something. He stepped in the litter box, sniffed, turned around, and walked out. Finally he urinated a lot on a backpack reluctantly. I thought he doesn’t like the litter so he reduced intake to not have to use the bathroom. I changed it from walnut shell pellets to crystal to clumping clay but didn’t help. What can I do?

I would recommend bringing Maomao to the veterinarian to have him evaluated. I would let the veterinarian take a urine sample to make sure there is no urinary tract infection especially if he is urinating outside the litter box. This is a concern that I have when cats urinate outside the litter box especially if goes into the litter box and then comes back out. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
