Why is my puppy's ear red, dirty, and she's lethargic and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 5 months and 13 days old | 54 lbs

My 5.5 month old golden retriever puppy has one ear really red and it gets dirty really quickly. I’m cleaning it out every 2 Days. It’s her left ear. It’s been like this for a while but we haven’t done anything because she wasn’t pawing at it too much. Now she seems fairly low energy and isn’t finishing her food every time. I’m still not sure if she’s pawing at her ear anymore than usual.

Kylo likely is suffering from an ear infection. This can be caused by ear mites, bacteria or a fungus, or even a food allergy. Please take her to your veterinarian for an exam. Ear infections are very painful and can cause hearing loss.
