My dog is still in pain after surgery on Carprieve. Can I give more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Malinois | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old

Hiya my dog was castrated and had his dew claws removed yesterday, the vets have given us carprieve 100mg tablets, 1 a day but he is clearly in pain and has already had his tablet this morning, I cannot find any dosage information online and was wondering if I could give him another tablet now or half a tablet?

Hi there. No, I would NOT give any extra doses of this medication. Carprieve (carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs are very effective for pain and inflammation and are commonly used in dogs, but using more than the recommended dosage can cause serious side effects such as stomach ulcers and internal bleeding. If you feel that Marcus is still painful even with the prescribed dose of his medication, I would recommend calling your veterinarian when their office opens in the morning. He/she can prescribe an additional pain medication for Marcus such as tramadol or gabapentin that can be given along with the Carprieve for additional pain relief, if needed.
