My dog has bowed paws. How to prevent future pain or arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 9 lbs

My dogs paws have looked like this for most of his life. They're bowed and the paws face outwards. He has no trouble walking or running and doesn't seem in pain with his joints. As he's getting older, I was just wondering wether I should be looking out for anything, like weakening or pain or arthritis setting in and if there's anything I can do to prevent these symptoms. I supplement his diet with glucosamine already. Thanks

It looks like Charlie could have some carpal valgus, usually due to a joint deformity that causes bowing of the front legs. There is an increased risk for arthritis in dogs with joint valgus, although some dogs go through their lives with no symptoms. I would watch for limping, stiffness, or reluctance to use stairs or jump which could signify pain due to arthritis. While there is no cure for arthritis the symptoms can be alleviated with pain medications and supplements. Continuing the glucosamine is a great idea, and I would recommend trying to keep Charlie pretty lean since being overweight can make joint issues worse.
