My cat is depressed after a family pet died. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I'm asking for a friend. About a week or so ago, Moochie passed away at about 9 years old. She was found by my friend as a very young, pregnant cat. My friend kept her and the kittens who are all about 8 years old. The tuxedo daughter, Black Pearl is doing fine, but 2 of the others are very depressed and not acting themselves. Is there anything my friend can do to help them with their grieving? The depressed cats are WarCloud and Spooky Salem. I haven't heard how Bagheera Boo is acting.

There are calming supplements and diets which can be very helpful, as well as pheromone and comfort zone diffusers which can help cats adapt to such situations. A full health check and possibly blood panel should be considered to rule out medical causes especially if there is any weight loss or altered thirst

I'm so sorry to hear this. Mental health in pets is poorly understood as we cannot speak to them, but certainly animals have the capacity to suffer loss. I would firstly go to your vet for an exam to rule out any other medical cause and also discuss measures to improve his quality of life. Enrichment and herbal remedies can help with these issues. Failing that prescription medication can be tried but as a last resort.
