My usually friendly cat got spooked and is now hiding. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

A little back story. My cat is always in my space wanting love following me around and never scared. Just recently my sister had a fainting spell and my cat got spooked and ran to the basement scratching my sisters face in the process. Now he is hiding in the basement. Literally hiding behind boxes and he won’t go upstairs and when I approached him he backed away and hid. He NEVER does this it’s like someone replaced my cat with a a lookalike. My heart breaks because this just isn’t how he acts.

If this just happened today I would give Hades time. Cats can get very stressed out and it may just take time for Hades to feel more comfortable again. If this happened weeks ago then I would recommend discussing this with your veterinarian to see if they have anxiety medication for Hades to feel much better. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
