Can I give my dog aspirin for hip pain? What are the side effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old

Side Effects of giving a dog, 1/2 Maximum Dosage of an ASA tablet, when in pain. (Has Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis is not setting in). My Vet told me about ASA causing her organs shutting down, because of the ASA, at some point, I don't know how long that is. I believe in Quality of Life, and not in Quantity of Life. Don't want to see her suffer, and always limping. I can't afford Vet's Pain Pills. Tasha is 5-1/2 yrs. old. Born with Hip Dysplasia. Weighs 95 - 100 lbs. Collie/St. Bernard.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Aspirin is used in dogs off label, mostly pet owners choose this. Vets do not like aspirin. . It can be very hard on the stomach and intestines in dogs causing ulcers and/or vomiting. You need to do what you think is best. As long as you understand the risks. https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/aspirin/ Good luck!
