Why is my dog coughing up phlegm? Is it infection or heartworms?

If dog is having phelgm so what is it mainly I mean is it normal infection like we humans have or in some other cases also they develop these if so then pls mention those cases in which they can develop phelgm? In heartworms disease do they also develop phelgm ?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. Most of the time if a dog is coughing up a white foamy material, an upper respiratory tract infection is to blame. This is similar to a human cold and be acquired anywhere. There are a variety of viral and bacterial causes. Heartworm disease can cause a dog to cough in advanced cases. This is usually a non-productive cough though. I hope this information helps!
