My senior dog with kennel cough is puffing cheeks. Should I call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 18.6 lbs

My 12 year old jack Russell is puffing his cheeks while sleeping. She does have kennel cough, diabetic, heart murmur and blind from cataracts. What could this be and should I contact my Vet. She is on antibiotic and cough suppressant.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Little Girl! If the cheek puffing/trouble breathing just developed and is a change then I would contact your Vet. I would worry that she is having a harder time breathing due to worsening of the pneumonia. She may need oxygen support, IV antibiotics and fluids. Or a change in antibiotics. I would have her seen today. Good luck!
