Is my vaccinated dog safe after killing a rat? Can it spread disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

Hello! My dog is a shiba, she killed a rat today, we are pretty sure her rabies vaccines are up to date, she is 3-4 years old. Do you know if a rabies vaccinated dog can transfer any virus or disease (rabies) to humans or pets?

If she is vaccinated for rabies she cannot transmit rabies, the main concern with rats is leptospirosis (wail's disease) that can also be transmitted to humans but if your dog is vaccinated then he should be covered for this bacteria as well.
