After deworming, when will my pet pass worms and will I see them?

Most puppies will stay on their normal pooping schedule unless the dewormer causes GI upset, in which case it could be anywhere from 1 hour to the next day. If there are worms in the intestines who are susceptible to the dewormer, you will likely see them passing out in the feces within 12 hours. Also keep in mind, that you may miss a low parasite burden and that not all worms are visible to the naked eye. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. It could be they had worms previously and you didn't know it. It sometimes can take until there is a heavy infestation of worms for you to see them in vomit or feces. Typically only eggs are passed in the feces, and those eggs can be seen with a microscope, not the naked eye. You have to repeat the deworming treatment to kill all the worms. The first one treats the adults already present, while the second in two weeks will kill the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Hopefully you will stop seeing dead worms in the next couple of days, but it means the treatment is working. Best of luck.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Bruce. Sometimes when pets are dewormed no dead worms are seen in the feces. This can be completely normal. Typically if worms are passed it's within 12-24 hours of the deworming dose. Intestinal worms can be very devastating in puppies not only robbing nutrition from the gut but also blood. Hookworms attach to the lining of the intestine and feed off of blood. This can be significant enough to kill a small puppy. If you add some fleas on that puppy who also suck blood, puppies can get into real trouble. So with intestinal worms, you can see low red blood cell counts (anemia), abdominal distention, low or no appetite, abdominal cramping/pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of energy/lethargy, poor skin condition, poor hair coat, shock, and even death secondary to the anemia/loss of appetite, etc. You should deworm every 3 weeks for hookworms and roundworms for at least 3-4 treatments. No, it would be highly unlikely to see worms in every stool. Worms only pass through the stool intermittently, just as they only shed their eggs intermittently. Be sure that the deworming medication that you purchased is appropriate for the type of worms that are present. If Diamond's worms resemble spaghetti, they are likely roundworms, whereas if they resemble grains of rice, they are likely tapeworms. Tapeworms can be a bit trickier to treat and will likely require prescription based dewormers from your vet. As fair warning, if Diamond has a large burden of worms, she may vomit or have diarrhea with worms present, but this is usually short-lived. I hope that all goes well!

Hello. Once the tapeworm has been killed by the wormer, the parasite is often digested ( it exerts a protective coating while alive ), & we usually do not see tapeworms passed in the stool. If it was a particularly heavy infestation, you may see some pass out, but this is not the norm. Any signs of tape segments should also disappear shortly. I like Profender, it is a good product, but I would follow label directions & reapply when recommended. Otherwise, once it wears off, your cat can pick up more tapeworms from hunting & from fleas ( make sure you are using a good flea preventative, too ). Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Yes, it is too soon. You deworm again, if necessary in 2-3 weeks. It is common to see a purge of live or dead worms after a deworming medication is given. Most dewormers cause a paralysis in the parasites that makes them unable to hold on to the intestinal walls of their host (your puppy). This allows the body to rid itself of them by expelling them out in the stool.

All puppies have worms. All of them. It is rare to actually see them in the stools so when you do, it is usually because they have a heavy burden. A puppy should be dewormed every time they get their vaccines and then once a month with their heartworm prevention for life. Don't worry about it right now as the worms are dying. Just make sure she gets dewormed again at her next vaccine appointment.

Yes, it's normal to see dead worms coming out in her poop a few days after being dewormed - this means that the medication is working. As long as she is acting normal otherwise, this shouldn't be any cause for concern :)

Yes, it's very common to see the worms after giving the deworm medication. This type of deworm medication works by inhibiting the nerves in the worm. While this usually does kill the worm, they may be somewhat alive still when they are passed in the stool. The fact that the worm came out indicates that it is at-least debilitated. If this was Millie's first deworm tablet, then it's best to give another one (like drontal plus) in two weeks to make sure you get all the worms. I hope that helps.
