My dog is throwing up and burning up, vets closed. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Hairless Terrier | Male | neutered | 22.6 lbs

My dog went from eating and playing Friday evening to waking up around2 to 3 am throwing up all Saturday. Sunday I scrambled an egg for him and that is all he has eaten and kept down. Giving water with a syringe and cool bath cause he was burning up. Vets are not open today. Is there anything Iam doing wrong or anything else I can do for him. He has me worried.

Poor Calvin! I wouldn't give him any more eggs, I can give you a bland diet to try to see if that helps him. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I would also take his temperature rectally, and if it's above 103F (normal temp is 101-102.5F), he will need to see a vet right away. Even though the vets are closed, there is typically a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. You can also see if there is any ER vet clinic in your area. I hope this helps!
