Why is my cat coughing, losing weight, and struggling to swallow?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat had lost lots of weights and she kept coughing and it feels like she had trouble swollaing and she needs to stretch her necks to swollaw. It seems hard for her and when she cough she stretches out her neck and it smells. Other than this she’s just normal still eating and using the liter box. But I’m worried there’s something wrong with her throat.

This sounds like your cat has an abscess, foreign body, naso-or oro-pharyngeal polyps, or ulcer or other type of purulent infection in her throat. She will need to be seen by a veterinarian who will need to thoroughly inspect her throat and upper airway, possibly under sedation and then remove the offending problem or lance an abscess. Please make an appointment for her tomorrow.
