My senior dog's kennel cough keeps returning. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 13 years old | 50 lbs

I have a 13 yr. old dog who got kennel cough , 3 weeks ago, the vet put her on one antibiotic and that didn’t seem to work so I took her back he checked her and said she was on verge of pneumonia , he gave me 2 different antibiotics and had me take her in bathroom and run shower for 10 minutes 2 times a day. This seemed to work, she finished antibiotics this past Monday and cough had seemed to disappear so I stopped showers but She has started up with cough again.

Hi there. I sounds like either Twix didn't fully clear the infection or she has an underlying lung issue going on. I would recommend having your vet recheck her and take some xrays of her lungs. Because of her age, she could have bronchitis, asthma or something else going on which is allowing the cough to continue. I hope that helps and that Twix feels better soon.
