My dog touched a toad. Are toads poisonous and what are the symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old

My dog, Tasha, Collie/St. Bernard Mix, 95 lbs. A few days, ago, she found a toad in our yard. I don't know if she sniffed,it, had it in her mouth, or bit it. Anyway, at one a.m., the next morning, she could hardly get up, or keep her balance, and vomited twice, for 1/2 hour. Are Toads poisonous to Dogs? She is fine, now. Otherwise, I don't know why she couldn't keep her Balance very good.

Some toads are toxic to dogs and usually what you will see is neurological signs (as you described). If she had been a smaller dog she may not have survived.... I don't know if you have these toxic species in Canada so you will have to do some research. Here is a link to an article about toad poisoning in dogs: ( https://www.petcoach.co/article/first-aid-for-toad-poisoning-in-pets/ ) ( https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/toads/ ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
