My new rescue dog is scared and growling. How do I help him adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered

I just bought a new dog today, his previous owner can't take care of him anymore due to medical reasons. He's is the same age and breed as my female dog. But Buddy is extremely scared and refuses to move. He has snapped and growled at me multiple times. I was wondering if there is any advice to calm him down and help him adjust? He last home was just one person and no animals. Here I have multiple animals and multiple people do there is a lot more noise.

Give him some time to acclimate. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety. Consider short visits to a dog park or short walks to get him further acclimated. Praise and reward him as he progresses, but correct any negative behavior immediately. If you need help, consider an obedience or socialization program. The local Petco may offer one or both.
