Why can't my dog lift her head, is lethargic, and sleeping more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

My 6 year old female Chihuahua can't lift her head up for anything, sleeping more than usual, and has no energy. This occured last week. She was fine one morning but then next she had completely changed to an energetic dog to sleeping mostly. We took her to the vet and they gave her a muscle relaxer and prescribed her metacam oral which we still give her. We didn't have the money to get her an x-ray but if there's any other reason she's like this please help.

Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. It sounds like your veterinarian was suspecting some form of neck injury that could be causing this. The signs could be explained by an injury to her spinal cord, especially one from a slipped disk. Which would in certain situations improve with he medications you were prescribed. However, other causes of this could include some form of metabolic disease (hypothyroidism, diabetes, liver disease, or kidney disease). Finally, other infectious diseases should also be considered. Ideally, to screen for any of these diseases, Lily should be evaluated by her veterinarian if she is not improving and likely have additional diagnostics including bloodwork, x-rays, and potentially an abdominal ultrasound performed. Please call your veterinarian to discuss any option for payments or financing Lily's care. Hope this helps and best of luck.
