My Syrian hamster has been gaining weight fast - at the vet I was told basically his fluids aren’t pumping through his body correctly. So, I know there isn’t much that can be done, but how can I keep him comfortable? As bad as it sounds, is there any guessing how long he will last? And when he passes away, will he be in pain? (Assuming this will lead to heart failure - Vet Tech said) and what signs should I look for if his heart does give out?

If his abdomen has fluid, you can have him tapped periodically to provide relief. If the underlying cause cannot be treated, your options may be limited. If he retains fluid, it could affect his breathing which will not be a comfortable condition. Monitor for lethargy, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite or pale, blue gums.
