Why does my cat lick my hand but run away when I try to pet it?

My cat licks my hand and run away if i try to pet it or get close to it why is that happening

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Welcome to having cats. They are a peculiar mix of curiosity and skittishness, and I find that even more true in kittenhood. Try just keeping your hand still next time. Let her lick/nibble as she likes without attempting to move or pet her. Eventually she will learn to fully trust you and will start rubbing her head on you. Then start very slowly (without moving th position of your hand) rubbing back and forth with just your fingers. Eventually she will be demanding petting! Best wishes to you and Alsa!
