My dog is shaking, hiding, and not eating after a recent food change?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

Peanut has been shaking and hiding almost two days.. He has anxiety in the past but never this bad... He didn't eat yesterday but will take his treats. We did change foods a little over a week ago and was thinking maybe it's the food?? He won't even let me hold him. He did sleep with me last night and stopped shaking for a few hours then jumped off and went under the bed. He has to be forced to come out to even use the bathroom

Shaking can be a sign of anxiety, but it can also be a sign of pain. Back/neck and abdominal pain in particular can be difficult to localize and sometimes reluctance to move and shaking are the only signs. Shaking can also be a sign of a fever. If you think Peanut might be painful or if he continues to show no interest in his regular food I'd recommend seeing your vet for an exam. They can look for a source of pain and evaluate his temperature.
