For the last week or so my dog has been shedding like crazy,i can literally pinch his hair and pull out full wads of hair even after bruching him with a fine wire bruch for half hour+.. im not sure if its related but he looks very patchy atm when he didnt a week ago. i believe its from him losing hair and sheedinf more hair faster in some places rather than others.but today wehn brushing him i noticed a large bald spot at the base of his tail where it meets his anus that was red and looked fairl

Hello, sorry to hear about Tate. Its likely that his faster shedding is being caused by an underlying allergy. It sounds that you are describing an area of irritation that is in the same location were dogs often get flea allergy dermatitis. This is an allergy to the flea saliva, and you may not necessarily see fleas on your dog for them to develop the allergy. A single flea bite may produce enough saliva to elicit an allergic reaction. This could also make him very itchy and anxious. Other causes of this would include any other form of allergies, a food deficiency, skin infection with parasites or bacteria, and less likely a primary hair growth problem. Make sure that Tate is on yearly flea control. If he continues to have hair loss, then he should be seen by his veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
