Cracked paw, slight limp: Does my dog need a vet or can I watch it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 30 days old | 55 lbs

I noticed Moose had been limping slightly and he has a crack in his paw. He was running around a lot the day is started so I’m sure he landed on a rock weird. It’s not bleeding or anything. His limp has also gone down and is hardly noticeable. He also still wants to run around a play so it doesn’t seem to bother him. Should I take him to a vet or just keep an eye on it?

Hello! That looks like a pretty minor cut, so I think you're safe to keep an eye on it for now. Clean it 1-2 times per day with a warm water washcloth or saline- no need for soaps, ointments, or bandages. I would try to limit his activity over the next few days so that he doesn't open it up any more than it already is. Another thing- don't let him lick it! Many dogs go overboard when they have a tiny cut and make it worse. There are different cone options available at pet stores if you need to get one for him. If it begins to swell, ooze, or become painful then it's time to go to the vet to get any infection under control. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! :)
