My dog is vomiting. Could he have parvo after my shelter exposure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

I recently went to a shelter and one of the dogs there had parvo, and I came in contact with it, and I washed my hands about 5 times at the shelter and then some more once I was home. My dog has been throwing up recently and i’m Not sure if he had something unusual or if it’s possibly parvo. He has had no other symptoms and he’s 7 years old.

Parvo can be carried on a person’s clothes and shoes, but if Tucker is already vaccinated against parvo, there’s no worry he can get it. He may be vomiting for a different reason, such as a GI illness, foreign body, or eating something rotten. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, he stops drinking water, he starts vomiting water, he has diarrhea, there’s blood in his stool, and/or he become very lethargic, then I would take him into the vet. Now if he isn’t vaccinated for parvo, then yes it’s possible he could have gotten it from your clothes or shoes. In that case, I’d take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
