How to manage my dog's aggression towards other dogs and cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Hi I got my dog lucky from a shelter 2 months ago and I am traveling to go live with a family member for a little while who owns a cat. the shelter says he is not good with other dogs I want to see how I can fix that and how I can get him to stop trying to attack cats and other animals such as dogs? but he doesn't like male dogs but sometimes like female dogs and like to be dog aggressive towards other big or small dogs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These behaviors can sometimes be changed or modified and improved. However, this usually requires in person training. I highly recommend that you consider contacting a local dog trainer who can help you in person. This can improve but does require a profesional to help you in person. Good luck and have a great day!
