My cat is noisy at night. Is crating her in the bathroom acceptable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

I can't sleep in my own room at night because my cat makes too much noise, so for a few days I put her in the bathroom in a cage till the morning. I sleep for about 12 hours every night. Is this a cruel punishment? Will my cat resent me for doing this? Or is it okay to do because she'll just sleep the whole time. Please help.

Hello! It is absolutely not cruel punishment to contain your cat so you can sleep. I know of multiple high energy cats that are crate trained for this exact purpose. Cats love hanging out in small, dark spaces anyway, so with positive reinforcement, patience, and time, she will likely begin to love her crate time! I also recommend toys that dispense treats when they are played with for all high energy cats, as it can really help get them exercise and simulate their hunting instincts to play for food. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! :)
