My dog ate expired raw pork. What should I do if she gets sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 15 years and 4 months old | 90 lbs

My 15.5 year old 90 lb arthritic Shepherd/ Rottie ate about a 1/4-1/3 lb. of raw pork that was thrown away because it is expired by over 4 months, what can I do? It's been 4 hours, she isn't showing any signs food poisoning yet I just want to be prepared. I need to be able to treat her here. No vet available. She has a typical diet of canned dog food, kibble, sweet potatoes, raw and cooked turkey, and cooked chicken throughout the week taking into acct. her wt. & activitylevel- which is minimal

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Zelda may not get sick from the pork. If the meat wasn't rancid or spoiled then she could digest it with out any issue. Raw pork can contain food born pathogens like toxoplasma, but signs of that may not develop for months. There is nothing you can do for that in the short term. If she just ate it you could contact your Vet to discuss inducing vomiting to remove the raw pork. We are unable to provide instructions on inducing vomiting. Otherwise I would just watch her. If she shows signs of vomiting or diarrhea I would fast her for 12-24 hours and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!
