My dog won't drink water after surgery, but eats ice chips. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 23 lbs

Lou had IVDD surgery on 7/19/18 he is recovering very well. Eating well and moving his legs. But last night he didn’t want his water (he usually loves water) today he did the same thing. Like not wanting it at all he does take a few sips then he’s done but if I offer ice chips he goes to town with them. Should I be concerned and contact his vet

I'm glad Lou is recovering well from his surgery! While it is concerning he won't drink water, it's good he will take the ice chips. He's still getting water if he's taking the ice chips . Try putting the ice chips in water, and you can also give him ice chips alone as well. If after a couple of days he's still refusing to drink water, then I'd give his vet a call. Best of luck!
