My 14-year-old dog's leg lump popped and is oozing pus. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 1 month old | 76 lbs

My female dog that is 14 had looked like to have a ball sack on her back leg. It had been there for maybe a year or two, nothing had happened to it, so my mom and I didn't think much of it. This past weekend it has popped and puss has come out of it. We have been cleaning it, she doesn't seem to be in pain. Do u think you know what was on her leg?

It could be that Jasmen had a cyst which has now ruptured. If there is pus, however, it means there is an infection and she needs to see the vet. The vet can confirm if it is a cyst, if there is an infection, and can prescribe antibiotics. Give the vet a call in the morning to make an appointment, and gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep her from licking at it, put an Ecollar on her if needed. I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Best of luck. http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html

Ouch, poor Meyla! It could be she has a cyst on her leg that has just ruptured. I would have this checked out by a vet. If she does have a cyst, the cyst sac may need to be removed surgically to prevent it from occurring again. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and if she tries to lick, put an Ecollar on her. You can make one at home or get one at a pet store. Give your vet a call today to make an appointment. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
