Why are my two male cats suddenly hissing and chasing each other?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 20 days old | 2.1 lbs

Hello. Both of my male cats have always gotten along so good-best friends really. They are both indoor cats. They have been with eachother since kittens and have not had any issues. The last couple of days, gattino has been hissing at Pernell and what appears to then try and escape Pernell. Pernell will then try to chase him wherever he goes. I will begin a separation trial at home to see if this helps, but what could be causing the sudden change in behavior towards each other? Thank you

Did Pernell go to the vet recently or leave the house for a period of time? When cats go to the vet or leave the house for a period of time (such as going to a kennel), they can come back smelling differently and that would cause the existing cat to view the returning cat as a stranger. Then that would lead to aggression. Or it could be that Gattino isn't feeling well. If he was in pain that would causing him to react aggressively to Pernell. I'd recommend a check up with the vet for Pernell to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps!
