My Australian Shepherd won't eat his raw food. Is he sick or picky?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old

Our Australian Shepherd sometimes wont eeat his food. He gets raw feed meant for active dogs, and he is full of energy and is normal even though he doesnt eat. Today he didnt eat until 9PM and only when I gave him a turkey throat. Could he just be a really picky eater, or could there be a real problem?

Hi there, Charlie is young so serious disease causing his lack of appetite is less likely, but it would still be a good idea to have your veterinarian do an exam and some blood work. Some dogs with tooth pain will have decreased appetite, or he could have something internally going on like mild pancreatitis causing nausea. I'd have your vet check him to be safe, but he may also just be picky as many herding breeds tend to be. I hope that helps, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
