Why is my senior pitbull limping, not eating, coughing, and has fatty poop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

I have a 12 year old pitbull who recently hurt his back leg. He walks okay on three legs but did not eat dinner last night. He won’t eat or drink water today. His poop looks like he has fat in it ( like fat on a steak). He also had issues with coughing for the past week or so.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on your description, I would recommend having Bucky examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The limping on the back leg and coughing may be related. If he has a bone tumor it may have spread to the lungs causing the cough. These symptoms could also be completely unrelated and he may have bronchitis or a respiratory infection along with a leg injury such as a torn ACL. I would have his leg and chest x-rayed to see if there are any concerning changes. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy help you further.
