What to do if my 3-day-old puppy won't eat, move, and keeps gagging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Mastiff | Female | unspayed | 3 days old

I have a 3 day old puppy that was fine last night and earlier this morning. Now she won't eat will hardly move and keeps gagging but I checked and I don't see anything. I also used a nose sucker just in case and nothing. The other puppies are fine. She is not the runt of the litter but is one of the smallest. English mastiff breed. Anything will help at this point.

I am so sorry to hear that one of the puppies doesn't seem to be thriving early on. This is very common unfortunately and it is called fading puppy syndrome, which is caused by a genetic defect with the puppy. You can try bottle feeding the puppy, keeping her warm, and get her checked to make sure she doesn't have a bacterial infection that needs to be treated for, but the chances of survival in cases like this are low. You can also try offering her small amounts of Karo syrup to keep her blood sugar levels up. But before all of that, check the roof of her mouth for an cleft palate defects, since that is a common cause for the symptoms you have described. I do hope that she does turn around, and do your best to help her. Take care.
