My hamster's foot is swollen and he's biting. Could it be infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered

My hamster's foot is looking a little strange. It looks a little swollen and gross. It doesn't seem to be affecting him any but it is still concerning. I can't get a good look at it because every time I try to he tries to bite me.

It looks like it may be infected. This would need to be confirmed by your veterinarian after a physical exam. Hero may need antibiotics if this is the case. In the meantime, keep the cage clean and dry. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible.

Thanks for reaching out about Duke and including photos. Most likely inflammation from a fracture/strain or an abscess. Try applying a warm compress to take down swelling (hopefully without getting bit). A veterinary visit is recommended: if fracture then is painful, if abscess needs antibiotics. Good luck.
