My dog's bum cut from grooming. How to treat at home and stop licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | 2 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

I was grooming my dog and accidentally cut her bum with the clippers. I stopped the bleeding and flushed the wound with a saline solution. I also washed her with an antibacterial shampoo. Her behavior is normal, the only thing that is different is she rub her bum across the floor and she licks and smell her bum more then normal. Is there any way this can be treated at home? What should I do?

The main probem here is that your dog is licking the wound and that she is rubbing it on the ground. You will need to get an e-collar to keep her from licking and you may need to put a t-shirt or similar cover on the dog that covers the wound. If the wound turns red, swollen, oozes pus or other fluids, you should have it examined by your veterinarian.
