My dog won't eat prescription food. Can I mix it with old food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 years and 7 months old | 23 lbs

Duke has been prescribed Hills weight management and mobility issue is he doesn’t seem to like it unless I mix it with a little bit of his old (blue buffalo) wet food. I give him about half the recommended amount of dry and make up the difference with the wet food. Is this acceptable?

Unfortunately no, this isn't acceptable. I'm assuming your vet put him on the weight management food for a reason, and by adding in the blue buffalo, you are giving him extra calories he doesn't need. It negates the point of the weight management food. I would just feed him the Hill's only. If he's hungry, he will eat it. I hope this helps.
